Champions League round of 16 action began on Tuesday with Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid scoring impressive victories while contenders Liverpool and PSG were sent home with a loss and work to do. Liverpool, the reigning champs, lost 1-0 at Atletico Madrid on Saul Niguez’s winner as the Reds didn’t record a single shot on goal. Dortmund got two goals from 19-year-old Erling Haaland to put a foot into the round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over PSG, though Neymar’s away goal could prove crucial come the second leg.

Scoreboard

Atletico Madrid 1, Liverpool 0
Borussia Dortmund 2, PSG 1

Here are takeaways from the match:

Reds in real trouble ahead of second leg

This wasn’t vintage Liverpool. In fact, the Reds followed up that rough display against Norwich over the weekend by not testing Jan Oblak at all. Atleti’s signature high pressure didn’t prevent the Reds from passing the ball well, but there was little room to work with, especially down the wings. Atletico’s intensity, drive and teamwork saw the Reds’ first team lose for just the second time all season and the first time since September.

In the second leg, don’t be surprised if Atleti goes all out defense and just tries to poach a goal on the counter. If Atletico can score at Anfield, Liverpool will then need three goals to move on. Atleti hasn’t conceded three goals in any game this season.

The Reds remain the slight favorite to go through because of how sharp they are at home, but squeezing by in Europe is what Diego Simeone-led Atleti does.

Heroic Halaand continues unbelievable form

If you want to know just how good Erling Haaland has been, consider that he has scored more goals in the Champions League this season (10) than Barcelona (9). The Norwegian rising superstar scored his first one from close, but his winner in the second half was absolutely out of this world. Check out the assist from 17-year-old Gio Reyna, who became the youngest American to play in the competition.

Before Haaland joined Dortmund in January from Red Bull Salzburg, this was a matchup that PSG was expected to win. Haaland’s presence makes that big of a difference, and now nobody will be surprised if he scores a couple more in the second leg and Dortmund knocks PSG out again in the round of 16.

Neymar and company have a lot of work to do, because when it comes to facing stronger opponents, the French side can be average. Usually dominant in Ligue 1, PSG actually drew struggling Amiens 4-4 last weekend after going down 3-0.

With Marco Verratti and Thomas Meunier out of the second leg due to suspension, Dortmund is probably the very slight favorite entering the March 11 rematch at the Parc des Princes.

All to play for

Wild, fun first legs. Atleti sitting pretty and could be 90 minutes away from knocking out the champs. Dortmund get a good result at home, but that away goal from Neymar could be huge. Return legs set for March 11.

Dortmund 2, PSG 1 (FT)

Atletico Madrid 1, Liverpool 0 (FT)

Added time. Two in Dortmund, Four at Atletico.

Haaland makes it 2-1!

Dortmund back in front just like that! Reyna with the assist to Haaland, and he rifles home from range! Golazo.

Goal PSG!

It’s Neymar! Mbappe with an unbelievable run inside the box, and he feeds Neymar right in front of goal! Level!

Haaland’s opener

Mbappe’s chance

GOAL Dortmund!

The Germans have scored! It’s Haaland, of course! He finishes a rebound from close to make it 1-0!

Nearly for PSG!

Two great chances for PSG. Di Maria plays Neymar, the Brazilian sends Mbappe through, and his rocket shot is saved at the near post! Neymar’s shot on the rebound then doesn’t find the mark.

Shortage of goals

Through over two hours of action, we’ve got just one goal. Liverpool feels like the most likely to score out of the four playing. The Reds are controlling the ball well and finding space.

Mo Salah came this close ….

Oh Dortmund…

Fantastic from the hopes with some lovely combination that sees the chance at a great chance inside the box, but the passing is off and nothing comes of it.

The second halves are underway

Halftime scores

Atletico Madrid 1 (Saul), Liverpool 0
PSG 0, Borussia Dortmund 0

Halftime at Dortmund. 0-0 between Dortmund and PSG. Both teams with solid chances but no real golden chances.

Liverpool hasn’t recorded a …

The Reds don’t have a shot on goal. Wild to think for what’s the top attack in Europe by many standards. Atleti’s plan so far has worked well.

Salah’s blocked chance that nearly went in

Liverpool knocking on the door

Mo Salah with a lovely chance inside the box, and the shot was rifled towards the upper corner but his a defender and goes out for a corner. That was very closer. Don’t think Jan Oblak would have gotten to it.

Half hour gone

30 minutes gone in each match. Dortmund improving against PSG, and the same for Liverpool against Atleti. Who will be the next to score?

Sancho denied!

Over in Germany, Jadon Sancho just got a fantastic look on goal inside the box, but his curler is pushed wide by Keylor Navas. Had he hit in a bit more to the right post, that maybe just sneaks in.

What a save by Alisson!

The Brazilian shotstopper just denied Morata at the near post! It was the 2-0 for Atleti. Morata goes low, Alisson gets a leg on it and it somehow doesn’t goin!

Atleti’s opener

Dortmund with a quality chance

Nice little run there from Jadon Sancho deep into the attacking half as his strike goes by the post of Keylor Navas. Accuracy was off. But he had a clear look.

Better from Liverpool

The Reds are improved. Liverpool is getting the ball deep and going at Atleti with pace, with the home defense is doing what it needs to. Defending in numbers with 8-9 players in the box.
